Mercedes doubles transition speed despite pandemic
Where in a distant time Daimler began the adventure of motoring mobility, we say goodbye to thermals, thinking of a really and uniquely electric short-term future. Despite the pandemic, Mercedes doubles the speed of transition.
It has been said for some time and many even give terms, the dates often discussed with heated controversies. There is talk of when the cars with internal combustion engines will have to give way, even on the Highway Codes, to the native electric of the future generation.
To date, not everyone understands what it implies, but those in charge of the industry understand the enormous potential of the new electric natives. The official programs of the leading car manufacturers, in charge of the main organizations that “make the market,” pave the road and provide clarification. Those that many then blindly follow in a variety of ways. The most well-known brand, as well as the one that may be linked to “the invention of the car,” is Mercedes.
Well, in Stuttgart they explained that in just four years, from 2025, their development and production work will be aimed solely at electrical architectures: the modular MB.EA, VAN.EA or AMG.EA . It means that what remains today on the thermal front already has an end, together with the dedicated investments that will run out. Some were surprised by the plans approved by CEO Ola Källenius, who doubled BEV’s share in the 2025 sales forecast, others did not.
Because here we are not talking about the theories of politicians, to be passed between parliaments and debates that correct them gradually, before they become the norm. The Mercedes group is serious about producing pure electric vehicles by 2030 when what remains of the thermal front will be disposed of and destined for history. The steps are already evident with a rich range most of all, for content and variety of segments, already full of BEVs today. It will then be from next year, 2022, that Mercedes will boast battery-electric models in every segment.
From the theories debated for many Italians, with associations, organizations and politicians discussing the regulatory term of thermal retirement, to the planned, irreversible capital reallocation in Mercedes: 40 billion euros at stake between now and 2030, complete with acquisitions in the motor and battery sector outside Germany and new plants . There will be seven EV production sites and nine battery assembly points, with partial reconversion of the historic European “iron” activities and staff training.
The rules will certainly be corrected again, very perhaps, to satisfy everyone’s needs, but the accelerated transformation of the Mercedes is a strong sign . The batteries of the new German premium electric cars, anticipated by the Vision EQXX concept, they will increase the energy density, aiming at 900 Wh / cubic decimeter (silicon-carbon anodes) to break through the wall of 1,000 km in autonomy. Last but not least, the House will take care of the ease of recharging, trying to cut every superfluous step for a real Plug & amp; Charge the car at the column.
